This abstract reports the results from 100 cases of hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) in liver transplantation at a Portuguese transplant center (Unidade Local de Saúde de Coimbra, Portugal). The study found that HOPE allowed increased use of marginal (extended criteria) liver grafts, was associated with good immediate post-transplant graft function, and reduced the incidence of non-anastomotic biliary strictures compared to previous local data. The authors conclude that HOPE provides clinical benefits in optimizing organ use and reducing complications following liver transplantation.
