Explore a lecture given by Professor Dutkowski of Switzerland on the treatment and assessment of liver grafts on HOPE. The lecture explores the mechanism of ischemia in organ transplantation and how reperfusion triggers mitochondrial injury. The key mechanism is avoiding redox stress by slow succinate oxidation. Rapid changes in tissue metabolism related to ischemia, followed by reperfusion, cause large changes in mitochondrial ROS production and subsequent oxidative damage. HOPE repairs the mitochondria before transplantation by reprogramming the mitochondria. The amount of injury can be measured on a continuous scale utlizing FMN to assess graft viability.
